Dear All,

We have had a number of workshops in the last few weeks and the children have really enjoyed, and learned, from them. Also, each provider has commented on how well the children behaved and responded to the sessions, saying that they are amongst the best groups that they have worked with. I wanted you to know this because we are all so proud of our pupils. The way that they behave is a result of your input and the great, working partnership that we have with you and it is something that you can be proud of.

Today the 3/4 and 4/5 classes had a Potions Workshop, which is linked to their Science and the History topic.

Tomorrow, Year 6 start their work on the Chartists, with a workshop in preparation for the Chartist March on 25th October. They will have a second workshop in a few weeks.

On Wednesday, Year 6 have a Lego Workshop, as they were not included in the recent Techniquest workshops.

Also on Wednesday, there is a Reading Meeting for Reception parents starting at 2.45pm. The meeting will give you an insight into the way reading is taught and ways to help your children with their reading.

On Thursday morning between 9.00am and 11.00am Miss Spray and Mrs Jones will be holding the first Families Connect meeting, which follows on from their Coffee Morning. This is aimed at Year 1 and 2 parents, and there is a commitment to an eight week programme.

On Thursday afternoon, Mrs Parry and Class 5/6P will be hosting a MacMillan Coffee Afternoon, from 2.30pm. This always a lovely event and it raises money for a great cause. Please join us if you can. Mrs Parry’s class are also grateful for any donations of cake.

On Friday, school and Nursery will be closed for an INSET day. Also, there will be no Breakfast Club on Friday.

There are two important issues that I need to remind you of:

The first is that the back of the school is very busy at the beginning and end of the day. Please take care when arriving or leaving by car, as there was a near miss last week when a car almost reversed into a child on their way to school. Remember to keep a look out for children around you.

The second is about birthday cake. I mentioned in last week’s newsletter that we cannot cut and give out cake. If you want to send in a treat for your child’s birthday, please could you check the number of pupils first. You can send in individually wrapped cakes, sweets or bars but there must be enough for all the children in the class, otherwise we cannot give them out. Also, please be aware of allergies and dietary issues, so avoid nuts or gelatine in treats. Then, all the children can celebrate with your child.

Our Attendance target has been set by Newport City Council, and it is 94%. Last year we narrowly missed our target, so it is very important that we try to reach, or exceed, it this year. The Welsh Government recommends attendance of above 95% for all pupils. We all know that there are times when children are unwell or circumstances mean that they are unable to come to school, but please help us as much as you can. We have made a good start and we will need to keep it up.

Jeans for Genes Day

The children raised a total of £136.60 for Jeans for Genes Day. Thank you for your support.

Fruit Money

If your child is bringing in tuck money, then please ensure that they have the correct amount and that they take it directly to their class teacher. Please do not hand money to staff on the door in the morning as it is a very busy time.

Dinner Money

There are far too many children with outstanding debts on their Parentpay/Paypoint  account for school dinners. Please ensure that you pay off your debts immediately and that you pay before you order meals for your children.  If you are having any problems with Parentpay or Paypoint, then please ask for help at the office at the end of the school day.

Home Sandwiches

If your child is having lunch from home, please can you send them in with it first thing in the morning.  Many parents are dropping in with lunches throughout the morning and office staff are not always available to answer the door.

Bonus Ball

There is another roll over this week.

If you would like a chance to win, please ask at the office. You can choose a number and it costs £1 per week. Funds raised are split, half as a prize and half to School Fund, and every penny helps!

Yours faithfully,

Mrs S Couch
