Dear Parent/Carer,
Children singing in the ‘Excerpts from Opera’ performance at the Newport Cathedral with ‘Offstage Opera’ on Saturday performed so well and were a credit to you!

It was lovely to have the chance to take part in this lovely are and music project together with pupils from the Gaer Primary School and we’re grateful to Dr Emma Gibbins for working with our children beforehand. Thank you also to Ms Bowden, who accompanied them.

Year 2 pupils had a great day today in the Really Wild Project (@Bristol). They saw an amazing range of animals and were really excited when they got back. 😊

Year 6 pupils spent the morning at the Crucial Crew workshop which is run by Gwent Police and Schoolbeat, for all Year 6 pupils in Newport. Children learned about sensible and safe life choices and picked up some strategies ready for when they go to high school.

Both groups were so well behaved. Well done! 😊

Several of our families are celebrating Divali this week and the School Council asked if we could do something to share in the celebration. As a result, we’re having a special Divali Assembly tomorrow, which has been put together by members of the school Council. They also asked if children could wear Divali or any other special clothes from home, and this has been agreed. There is no charge if your child wears home clothes tomorrow.

Following the Schoop message last night, Parental Consultations will now be phone conversations and will not be in school. Your child’s teacher will phone you and, for data protection, will be phoning from a withheld number, so please look out for it. The days and times are:

  • Tuesday 25th – Consultations – All classes – 3.45-7.00pm
  • Wednesday 26th – Consultations – All classes except Cl 3/4MP – 3.45-6.00pm
  • Thursday 27th – Consultations – Class 3/4MP – 3.45-6.00pm

I hope that these conversations will be helpful but if you have any unresolved issues around booking, please let me know first thing tomorrow.

Unfortunately, we’ve had to postpone the Family Learning session planned for Thursday morning – ‘The Terrible Twos…. To Teenagers’ with Mrs Jones and Mrs Jarrett. We hope to hold it as soon as we can in the next half term.

Our Stow Hill Pantry,is open on Thursday from 3.00-4.00pm.

We had a number of extra families join us last Thursday, and all are welcome, but because of some conversations with parents, we think that some may not be aware of the original aim of the Pantry, which is to help those in the most immediate need or crisis. It’s not a foodbank and we receive no funding.

The staple food bags are provided by donations from Newport Cathedral, together with items donated by staff and Governors. The aim is to ensure that those in extreme need are supported and that we have enough food to go around. Cathedral donations are planned to finish at Christmas so we want to help you as much as possible.

On Thursday, we hope that a representative from the Raven House Trust, based at Stow Park Church, will be able to join us and give you advice about registering.

The Raven House Trust is an official foodbank for the west side of Newport and is supported by The Trussell Trust, who provide funding to foodbanks across the UK. Clients are referred to them by a variety of agencies for reasons such as losing a job, starting a claim and having no benefit, having a benefit sanction etc.

We are also looking into the possibility of setting up a small food co-operative and I’ll let you know more when I can.

If you have sudden need, the Citizens’ Advice Bureau can also help you.
(Free School Meal vouchers will be provided for next week.)

We break up on Friday for half term, and the School and Nursery will be closed for the week. School resumes on Monday 7th November.

Fruit and Snacks
Fruit tuck will be on sale after half term and pieces of fruit can be bought for 20p a day. If you don’t plan to send in your own fruit, children can bring I £1.00 a week for fruit, just as they did pre-Covid.

A number of children have been bringing in the energy drink Prime and it’s really not suitable for children as a healthy choice. Please don’t send your child in with it. Children staying to packed lunch can bring in a juice carton or squash (No glass bottles or cans.) However, our Water at Desks policy, is for children to bring only water in to drink in the classroom.

Parent Governor
Ballot Forms for the role of Parent Governor will be sent out tomorrow.

Congratulations
Congratulations and best wishes go to Miss Watkins who will be getting married on the weekend! When she returns, her new name will be Mrs Dimmick.

We wish you lots of luck and happiness in the future! 😊
I hope that everyone has a really lovely half term break!

Very kind regards,
Heather Vaughan
